Are Steel Security Doors Worth It?
A steel security door is worth it when strength is your priority and you're happy with the look and the upkeep. But the frame material is only one part — the infill, the lock and how the door is fixed to the house matter just as much. A well-made aluminium door with good hardware can outperform a poorly made steel one.

Steel vs aluminium
| Steel | Aluminium | |
|---|---|---|
| Strength | Very strong and rigid | Strength depends on the frame profile and construction |
| Weight | Heavier | Lighter |
| Corrosion | Needs a good protective coating; can rust if damaged | Doesn't rust; well suited to exposed spots |
| Look | Often traditional grille styles | Wide range, including slim modern frames with mesh |
What really makes a door secure
- The infill — strong mesh or grille, securely fixed into the frame
- The lock — quality cylinder, multi-point locking where needed
- Hinges and fixings — a door is only as strong as its fixing to the house
- Documentation — if a door is described as meeting an Australian Standard, ask for the product's evidence
Caring for a steel door
Wash it down with mild soapy water and a soft brush. Check for chips or scratches in the coating and touch them up promptly so rust can't start. Keep hinges and locks working smoothly.
When steel makes sense
Steel suits homeowners who want a heavy, rigid door and like a traditional look. If you live near the coast, want slim mesh frames or prefer low maintenance, a quality aluminium door may suit better.
