A Comparative Guide to Roller Shutters in Melbourne

Roller shutters are grouped by where they go and what they need to do: window shutters for homes, heavier shutters for shopfronts and warehouses, security-focused shutters, and a choice between manual and electric operation. This guide compares the types so you can narrow down what suits your property before you ask for a quote.

Manual or electric?

Manual shutters (strap or crank) cost less and have fewer parts. Electric shutters open at the press of a switch or remote, which matters for large shutters, hard-to-reach windows and shutters used every day. Many manual shutters can be converted later.

How to choose

Start with what you want the shutter to do, then look at the opening:

  • Privacy, sleep and comfort → window or residential shutters
  • Securing a vulnerable opening → security roller shutters
  • Shopfront or warehouse → commercial roller shutters
  • Exposed to sun and weather → outdoor roller shutters
  • Large, high or daily-use openings → consider electric operation

Seeing it before you buy

The look of a shutter on your home depends on colour and the box position as much as the type. Our Roller Shutter Visualiser is being built to help with this; until then, we can talk through options at the measure and quote.
