Exploring the Various Types of Fly Screens
The right fly screen comes down to two choices: the type of screen that suits the opening, and the mesh that goes in it. For most Melbourne homes that means made-to-measure window screens and sliding door screens, fitted with the mesh that matches how you use the space.

Window and sliding door screens at a glance
| Type | How it works | Suits | Consider |
|---|---|---|---|
| Window screen | Framed screen made to fit the window opening | Windows you open for airflow | Stays in place; a made-to-measure fit leaves no gaps |
| Sliding door screen | Screen door that runs on the door track | Sliding and stacker doors | Keep the track clean for smooth sliding |
Choosing your mesh
The mesh changes what the screen does. Standard fly mesh is for everyday insect screening with good airflow and visibility. DVA privacy mesh adds daytime privacy while still letting air through. Security mesh is the choice when you want a dedicated security screen.
Standard fly mesh and DVA privacy mesh keep insects out but aren't security products — if security matters, choose security mesh or a security door.
Other fly screen types you may come across
You'll also see retractable, magnetic and hinged fly screens online. Retractable screens roll away into a cassette; magnetic panels suit light or temporary use. Securetec doesn't supply retractable screens — for doors, a made-to-measure sliding screen is a durable everyday alternative.
Fly screen or security door?
A fly screen keeps insects out; it isn't a security product. For a door you want to leave open and locked, a security door with mesh does both jobs.
